Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly expressed his opposition to the possibility of the United States selling F-35 stealth fighter jets to Turkey. His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump indicated that his administration is considering allowing the advanced fighter aircraft sale to Ankara.
Speaking during a television interview, Netanyahu said that providing one of America’s most sophisticated military aircraft to Turkey could have serious consequences for the balance of power in the Middle East. While he acknowledged that Israel and the United States continue to work closely on many strategic issues, he made it clear that this particular proposal is a point of concern for his government.
Netanyahu Questions Turkey’s Role as a Strategic Ally
Netanyahu argued that Turkey’s current leadership has adopted policies that, in his view, do not align with the interests of the United States or regional stability. He claimed that strengthening Turkey’s military capabilities with advanced fighter jets could encourage more aggressive behavior instead of promoting peace.
The Israeli leader also pointed to the increasingly tense relationship between Israel and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying the disagreements between the two countries have deepened in recent years. According to Netanyahu, Israel has already communicated its concerns directly to Washington.
Trump Signals Openness to the Fighter Jet Deal
President Donald Trump recently suggested that his administration is reviewing the long-standing restrictions on selling F-35 aircraft to Turkey. During discussions held alongside the NATO summit, Trump reportedly described Turkey as an important US ally and indicated that a future agreement remains under consideration.
If approved, the move would reverse the restrictions that had previously prevented Ankara from acquiring the fifth-generation fighter jets, reopening a defense issue that has remained unresolved for years.
Israel Says Military Balance Must Be Protected
Netanyahu warned that transferring advanced fighter aircraft to Turkey could alter the military balance across the Middle East. He believes maintaining Israel’s qualitative military advantage remains essential for regional security and has urged US officials to carefully evaluate any decision regarding the sale.
Despite his disagreement over the aircraft issue, Netanyahu emphasized that his overall relationship with President Trump remains strong. He said both leaders continue to cooperate on several major international and security matters even when they hold different views on specific policies.
Netanyahu Also Comments on Iran Diplomacy
The Israeli prime minister also addressed ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Iran. While President Trump has expressed confidence that negotiations can help prevent Iran from advancing its nuclear ambitions, Netanyahu said he remains cautious about relying solely on diplomacy.
According to him, it is still too early to judge whether negotiations will produce lasting results. However, he acknowledged that the US administration should be given an opportunity to pursue its diplomatic strategy before drawing final conclusions.
Domestic and Regional Issues Also Raised
During the interview, Netanyahu criticized some American political figures over their recent comments about Israel and rejected claims that his government’s actions have weakened support for Israel in the United States. He argued that changing public opinion is being influenced largely by social media.
He also addressed concerns about violence involving Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, stating that such incidents are unacceptable and should be dealt with by law enforcement authorities. However, he acknowledged that the issue has become more serious in recent months.
